The Linan Tea Forest, where the Linan High Grade GREEN TEA is produced,
is located in the south-east of East China's Zhejiang Province. According to the
historical findings, Linan has a history 7,000 years old.
In the third year of the Yonghe Reign (AD 347), a county administration was set up and
given the name Le-an County which meant a County where people lived happily and
comfortably.
In the fourth year of the Jingde Reign ( AD 1007) of the North Song Dynasty (AD 960-1127),
Emperor Zhen Zong spoke highly of the area, "With the famous mountains and wonderful
caves around the place, it has many abodes where the angels are living." Thus, it was
renamed by his imperial edict as "Linan County," meaning a place where the
angels live. The name as well as the unspoiled natural beauty of the area remain the same
today.
The Story of Green Tea
According to Chinese legend, the story of Green Tea began in 2737 BC when Emperor Shen
Nung, who was known at that time as the "Divine Healer", always boiled his water
before he would drink it. He had noticed that his subjects who boiled their water before
drinking it seemed to have longevity and better health. One afternoon, as he knelt before
his boiling water, some leaves from a nearby tree blew into the pot. The Emperor noted a
delightful aroma and, upon sipping the beverage, proclaimed it as "heaven sent".
Since this first cup of Green Tea was brewed almost five thousand years ago, the
popularity of tea has increased to the point that it is presently the second most popular
beverage in the world. Only water surpasses green tea in popularity. Shortly after Emperor
Shen Nung's discovery, tea's popularity spread to Japan and the rest of the Far East
region. The Dutch people first brought tea from China to Europe and into America by 1650.
In 1669, the East India Company began bringing tea leaves into England, and in 1721, the
company was granted a monopoly on all tea imported into the British Empire.
In the beginning, tea was very costly and only royalty
and the upper class could afford it. At that time, tea prices were approximately $29 to
$49 per pound. It takes one pound of tea to make two hundred tea bags. During the 1800's,
tea ships raced from China to London and other around the world. The first clipper ship to
arrive with its cargo always commanded the highest prices. Mostly because of this new
method of speedy transportation by ship, the supply of tea became more plentiful and thus
eventually not as expensive.
Although green tea is more available than ever before,
there are many differences in quality and flavor depending on where it is grown and how it
is processed.
